چکیده

Abstract The bug Orius similis Zheng is a native generalist predator of insect pests in southern China. fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith), notorious defoliator that now an economically important pest throughout To investigate the ability O. to control FAW, we evaluated predatory capacity, behavior, and functional response with respect FAW their olfactory response. Both females males successfully preyed on eggs first-instar larvae but not second-instar or older larvae. Adult only attacked killed one egg larva at time before sucking prey, similar behavior was also observed regard masses. female male exhibited type II when preying Maximum estimated prey consumed per day 23.7 26.2 for adult 22.5 19.6 males. Moreover, Y-tube olfactometer experiment, both significant preference maize (Zea mays L.) seedlings damaged by over clean air, healthy seedlings, feces, suggesting may releases specific volatiles attracting predator. Collectively, results study suggest promising candidate biological larvae, particularly given its attraction FAW-damaged leaves, which enable it locate target rapidly.

Effects of Bt cotton on Thrips tabaci (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) and its predator, Orius insidiosus (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae).

Laboratory studies were conducted to investigate tritrophic transfer of insecticidal Cry proteins from transgenic cotton to an herbivore and its predator, and to examine effects of these proteins on the predator's development, survival, and reproduction. Cry1Ac and Cry2Ab proteins from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) produced in Bollgard-II (BG-II, Event 15985) cotton plants were acqu...

Identity of Two Sympatric Species of Orius (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Anthocoridae)

The minute pirate bugs, Orius insidiosus (Say) and Orius pumilio (Champion) (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Anthocoridae), are closely related species known to be sympatric in north Florida. Here, male and female genitalia, DNA sequences, and the effects of within- and between-species pairings on egg production and egg development were examined to develop a better understanding of the relationship bet...

The phylogeny of the Noctuidae (Lepidoptera)

A new phylogenetic system of the Noctuidae is proposed. The system should, however, be regarded as provisional because it is primarily based on only two character complexes: the male genitalia and the tympanal region. The presence of preabdominal brush-organs and the length of tibial spurs in the adult male, the presence of a ventral cervical gland and the lack of the SV 2 setae on the first ab...

Linking Life Table and Predation Rate for Biological Control: A Comparative Study of Eocanthecona furcellata (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) Fed on Spodoptera litura (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae).

To better understand the predator-prey relationship and to compare predation rates, we studied the life table and predation rate of the predator Eocanthecona furcellata Wolff (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) when reared on two major crucifer pests, Spodoptera litura (F.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and Plutella xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae). The net reproductive rate, intrinsic rate of increas...

A new Polychrysia (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae, Plusiinae) species from China.

The genus Polychrysia is comprised of seven species separated into three species groups. Six of the seven species are distributed in the Palaearctic region and one of these six species has a Holarctic distribution. The genus has been discussed in detail in monographs by Goater et al. (2003) and Ronkay et al. (2008). A new species of Polychrysia was discovered during an expedition studying the n...
